The week rushes by between classes and my job, but my thoughts stray to Levi. Always.

On Sunday, I drive to the stadium and give my name at the security gate. The bulky man lets me pass. Around the corner, I find Levi propped up on the wall, dressed in jeans and a V-neck shirt revealing his sculpted torso. I could never get tired of looking at him.

“You came.”

It’s awe mixed with something warm, and my heart flutters its frail wings. I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.

“Friends support friends.”

His lips flatten to suppress a smile. I elbow him, and he puts an arm around me.

“Let me escort you. I should have been in the locker room by now.”

He shows me around and opens a door and I blink.

“This is the box seat area. You’ll have the best view from here.”

“Levi, you shouldn’t have . . .”

But he waves me off and kisses my forehead, inhaling me. My knees weaken. When he’s gone, I’m still trying to gain control over my senses, muscles, heart and turn around to find eyes on me.

“I haven’t seen you here before.”

I look down to see a little blond girl, her pigtails waving with her movements.

“Anabelle,” her mom says in a desperate tone, but I like how forthcoming the little girl is.

“But it’s true, Mom.”

I lower myself to her and say, “This is my first time here.”

“You’ll like it.”

I smile at her and her mother, a beautiful woman who pats her on the head.

“I’m Kathy.”

“I’m Amelie.”

We chat a little, and when she says who her man is, my eyes must widen into saucers. Landon’s considered one of the best players.

“Yes, it never gets old,” she says, a dreamy expression transforming her soft face.

When the game begins, my eyes follow number eleven. I’m so entrapped, I forget my brother is playing too. Levi’s proficient at capturing all my attention.

“Levi’s a good guy,” she says as she looks around, I assume for her husband.

Don’t play dumb. She seems nice and not the prying type. What if I see her around? I want to make a good impression.

“He is.”

“You make a cute couple.”

Heat pokes at my cheeks. “Oh, we’re not together.”

She blinks at me, eyeing me incredulously. “I’m sorry. It’s just the way you looked at each other . . .”

I gulp and take a seat. I’m bouncing in my chair whenever he gets the ball, my hands crushed into fists over my chest.

Levi manages to score three touchdowns.

“He’s brilliant,” Kathy says. “My husband is afraid he’s gonna break his record.”

“He’s pretty ambitious.”

Anabelle springs from the chair and grabs her mother’s hand.

“Impatient like her daddy,” Kathy adds with a smile.

I want that. The love, the family. Not now, of course, but at some point in the future. The images of that future must have hijacked my brain. I shake my thoughts away and follow the game.

When the game is over, we stay until the stands begin to clear out and we are escorted down the back way to the field.
